Relax in sheer comfort surrounded by a subtle blend of Colonial and African influences. The hotel’s two hundred and seventy-one bedrooms, six themed restaurants and eighteen conference facilities, reflect the history of the hotel. Recent refurbishments have created a unique design language. The Royal Hotel's uncompromising hospitality has been a cornerstone of its 156-year existence in Durban. Rooms & suites offer panoramic views of the city & yatch basin, while our superb restaurants range from our flagship and award-winning "Royal Grill", to an Indian restaurant, "The Ulundi" and the exciting interactive dining experience of "Chefs on Stage". There is a total of 13 conference and banqueting venues ranging from glittering ballrooms to intimate boardrooms, which help make The Royal Hotel one of the regions top corporate destinations. Recent developments include the refurbishment of the bayside rooms and the Top of the Royal Restaurant, the introduction of a dedicated ladies floor in response to international security trends as well as an 18-hour a day butler service on all floors. Hospitality at The Royal goes back a long way, to the early 1840s when a sea captain supplying the British garrison sensed the port of Durban's commercial promise and bought the land upon which The Royal stands today. Opened as Durban's first hostelry in 1845, the building was originally a low-thatched wattle-and-daub building called the Commercial Hotel, a name that changed to The Masonic in 1852. In the years that followed the hotel became the centre of the town's rapidly growing community life and, following a Royal Appointment granted by Queen Victoria's second son, Prince Alfred, the hotel became known as The Royal in 1860. Much of the historical significance of The Royal relates to the guests who have visited the hotel. Eminent guests throughout the years include, Cecil John Rhodes, H.G. Wells, Rider Haggard, Marlene Dietrich, Mark Twain, Prince Alfred, Queen Elizabeth II, Margaret Thatcher, F.W. de Klerk, Mangosuthu Buthelezi and Nelson Mandela. It's hard to believe that this haven of grace is right in the heart of a busy cosmopolitan city. There is a quiet sense of restrained elegance which belies the bustle outside; a warm welcome echoes a bygone age of care and comfort in an unhurried mood of luxury. Yet The Royal Hotel is conveniently situated in Durban's Central Business district, within walking distance of extensive entertainment, commercial, sports and tourist facilities. It is also central to all transport networks, is 15km from Durban's International Airport and offers an in-hotel car hire depot. Accommodation
