The original reserve of 37,000 Ha is considered the oldest permanently declared reserve in Africa. In 2007 the Greater St Lucia Wetland Park was renamed to iSimangaliso (meaning "Miracle, or Marvel") Wetland Park. The park's uniqueness lies in its remarkable diversity. It is South Africa's third-largest park, spanning 280 kilometres of coastline, from the Mozambican border in the north to Cape St Lucia, south of the St Lucia estuary. The natural ecosystem consist of swamps, lake systems, beaches, coral reefs, wetlands, woodlands and coastal forests. Lake St. Lucia is the largest Estuarine system in the world. These ecosystems provide a natural habitat for an astounding diversity of species, from the country's largest population of hippos and crocodiles to giant leatherback turtles, black rhino, leopards, and a vast array of bird and marine life. St Lucia supports more species of animal than the better-known and much larger Kruger National Park and Okavango Delta. RatesRates
